Memories of Jim Yocom
By Jack L. Taylor, HHS 1950
I thought through the years I might run into Jim YOCOM since he lived in Conroe and I live in
Kingwood. I never did. I knew several people who lived there including Linda FOSTER
ALBRITTON, HHS 1950. I even played on Conroe's tennis team in a tennis league and my
daughter-in-law taught elementary school music there.
The last time I saw Jim was at Baylor on the campus around 1957. He was in the "The Nose
Brotherhood." That was a perfect match for him since he was a clown. They were a fraternity
that made fun of National Fraternities & Sororities.
Examples: 1. They--along with other school organizations-- took specific parcels of the
campus to beautify. They took a place where people would cut across the lawn and
had created a path. They put concertina barbed wire around the parcel and a member stood
guard in military uniform to keep people off the grass. 2. A couple of months after Christmas
they had a Christmas party in which they picked up their dates at the dormitory in a campus fire
truck with siren blaring. Billy GRAHAM and Bob HOPE were honorary members.
There were several from Hope at Baylor about that time. Marilyn SHIVER, Bill
and Imogene ARNOLD COX, Bob & his sister, Nina HARRIS, come to mind. Jimmy
Dan BABER was on their golf team. There were others. Probably Frances SILVER
REYNERSON had influence in pointing them in the direction of Baylor. Most
mentioned belonged to First Baptist of Hope in their youth.
One thing that stands out is his wife, Margaret Ann McCullough Yocom. She was daughter of
the Superintendent of the Conroe ISD. There are a lot of hits on the Internet about her and her
dad who was Superintendent of that very large school district. McCULLOUGH High School in
the Woodlands is named after him.
